Hi, I'm lost.

Post by Skittles »

Hi. I'm a long time reader of the webcomic. I usually stick to the comic but sometimes I'd come to the forum to see what others thought about a particular message and occasionally I would even join in. I tried going there the other day and it seems to be dead.

Is it dead? I keep seeing people tell other people to go back but it seems like there is no longer a back to go to. To anyone that responds, I appreciate the help.

...

Also, if I may be so bold, this board seems to have a really unwelcoming vibe. I know it's rude of a houseguest to speak ill of their host, but shouting at someone who is willing to listen and collaboratively engage in furthering the discussion does not seem like a successful recruitment rhetoric.

I really enjoyed those few times I got talk with others about topics so crucial to positively shaping our society and though I'd love to do so here, I get the feeling this isn't really the kind of board for the general rabble such as myself. And that's a shame because rarely will you change the mind of someone with whom you are unwilling to converse.

I apologize for bargin' in here and tellin' y'all how to act but it just breaks my heart to see so many missed opportunities for good to be done.

We have no idea what happened to the other forum. Message Tat.
Idk where you got the idea that you can't have a civilized debate here. Unless, ofc, you're not anti-porn, anti-prostitution and thinks radfems are just "evil terfs". Then, yeah, let's say you're the intolerant one. And, as Karl Popper said: "To mantain tolerance, we can't tolerate the intolerants".

Plus, don't come here with that kind of "coy" condescendent attitude. We aren't dumb. We see throught it. Thanks.
Call me Celina. This forum still have a long way to go until it gets filled with its intended public. And I'll do my best to help us reach that goal. I'm a battleaxe, and when you hear my voice it'll be as loud as a thunder and as clear as a blue sky.

Thanks for the suggestion. Probably should've thought of that myself. And for the record, I didn't even know what a terf was before coming here. I'm trying to keep a open mind about everything because more and more I've realized just how much the tone of the more recent Sinfest has helped break down my preconceptions.

And I apologize for for coming across as condescending. It seems like there's a lot of lashing out here, like how you've decided to imply that I'm intolerant after a single post and I know I'm doing it again - being all opinionated and stuff without having gone through the hardships experienced by many who were drawn here - but I couldn't help myself from speaking out against immediately demonizing those willing to have a conversation despite their differing points of view.

My music theory professor in college began voicing an opinion similar to your quote after Trump was elected and I admit that I wasn't able to build a strong argument against the idea of ostracizing people with such negative opinions (racists, white supremacists, sexists) but I just can't get behind the idea of jettisoning someone from the conversation or vilifying them because you don't agree with their viewpoint. One could say they refuse to submit to a death by a thousand cuts, but I have trouble believing your goals will be accomplished by burning any bridge that does exactly match your aesthetic.

If I had bailed on Sinfest when I started disagreeing with it, I would never have made it to a point where its message is really starting to sink in. Not to say you should listen to Nazi fuckheads, but if you're not willing to talk to them you can't slowplay changing their minds.

I apologize if this comes across as inflammatory rhetoric. I really am just trying to open a bit of dialog while I find out what happened to "The Bad Place" :P
